Why developers choose Android

Posted on Updated on

I recently ran across an article that talked about why developers should build for Android first then iOS and Windows.  This is not the normal and the first I have come across in my feeds.  The story has a compelling case and good reasons for developing for Android first.  Mobile is in such a state of change and I believe still trying to find its place in the consumers lives like the traditional desktop has.

Google Maps Navigation features are now available for Android 1.6 users

Posted on

As a user of the G1 I am very excited about this new functionality.  I have been using the previous GPS functionality within Google Maps but this brings a whole new level of awesomeness.

Google Maps Navigation Now Available for Older Android Devices [Android]: "

Previously users wanting to run Google Maps Navigation on their Android phones either needed a 2.0 device (like the Droid) or resorted to this workaround. Today, Google announced the application is now available for pretty much every Android device.

Google Maps Navigation is a GPS system with automatic rerouting and voice guidance. It uses a your phone’s data connection to get you where you need to be, and even churns out geographical information like nearby transit lines and popular locations, thanks its new Layers feature.

To get the app on your phone (U.S. users only), just grab the updated version of Google Maps from Android Market. A few features exclusive to Android 2.0 are missing, like the ‘navigate to’ voice command, but the Google Maps forum is filled with great tips on cool ways to tweak the app.

Have you been using Google Maps Navigation on your Android 2.0 device (or your special G1)? Share your tips with Android 1.6 users in the comments.

Solving the lack of an standard audio jack…

Posted on Updated on

I continue to hear people talk about how they don’t like the G1 Android phone because of the lack of a standard audio jack for their headphones.  At first when I got my G1 I was thinking the same thing but if you think about the wave of the future in transferring audio from a device to your headphones is via stereo Bluetooth.  I bought a set of stereo Bluetooth headphones and now I don’t care that the G1 doesn’t have a standard audio jack.  Problem solved!

The G2 Android (HTC My Touch)…

As an owner of the T-Mobile G1 Android with Google I feel compelled to tell others about my experience with the G1 and what I think of the G2; even though it is not officially on the market yet.

I pre-ordered my G1 and I have been enjoying it every day.  The latest update (Cupcake) and the future update codenamed Doughnut are what make this phone great.  The fact that Google can continue to add value and features to the phone is the best way I can think of to keep the phone growing with the users.  There is plenty of hype about the iPhone and you have to agree Apple does a great job marketing its products but I really think that the G1 and I am sure the G2 are definitely in the same class and it is the marketing that sets them apart.

Awaiting the unavailing of the G2…
