Why I don’t use an iPhone…

Posted on

If you have been following my blog then you would know that I use the T-Mobile MDA as my phone/portable media device.  You should also know that with all US cell phone carriers you can get a discount on a new phone when you re-new your contract for another two years.  So, my contract comes due next spring and I am looking at the current products in the market that I would potentially want to get when I re-new my contract.

The newest and most popular device is the Apple iPhone.  The first thing that most people say about the iPhone is that it is expensive; but I paid $350 for my T-Mobile MDA when it first came out on the market.  So in perspective, the iPhone price is about right.

Features…this category is what I care about the most when looking at a device.  Currently with a Windows Mobile Pocket PC I can do a lot of things not to mention all of the app’s that are out there for the Windows Mobile platform.  I could get some of the features on the iPhone but I would have to jailbreak the iPhone in order to do this.  I would not have a problem jailbreaking the iPhone but even with a growing number of 3rd party app’s I would still not have the same functionality that I do currently.

I also don’t enjoy the touch keyboard and I would rather have a physical keyboard for lots of typing on the device if needed.  So, I am looking for the next best device from HTC to stream into T-Mobiles product pipeline.

If you have any suggestions of some insight that would be useful to me or others then leave a comment by clicking on the link below.

T-Mobile MDA…

Let’s start with the most versatile of them all; my T-Mobile MDA. This is a great Windows Mobile 5 based device. I am running a couple of different third party applications to add to the productivity of the phone. The core add on is the Spb Mobile Shell. This allows me to have Windows Vista like icons as well as a three time zone clock, weather, & an icon based speed dial, all on the Home Screen. Since I consider myself a more advanced technology user then the average, I enjoy adjusting & having control over as many parts of my hardware as I can. With that said I have an app on my MDA that allows me to set the CPU (Central Processing Unit) at different clock speeds. This is called “over clocking” & with this advanced task comes the increase in heat dissipation by the CPU. There is also a part of the app that tells me the internal temp of the MDA. This advanced app is called Battery Status; there are many other applications that this developer has available for the MDA but this is the only one that I have downloaded thus far. I would make a list of the available third party apps for the MDA but to be honest there are just too many out there. Here are just a couple of the more popular: Windows Live Suite, Skype, SoftX FTP Client, Adobe Flash Player & Windows Mobile Fusion.

A great resource for finding more advanced products available as well as great user to user knowledge database is the xda Developers Forum.

Here are some links to help you find more information about the MDA from others on the web.
